How to bring more fun into your life

How can I add more fun to my life?

Having fun and recreation time is important to our overall health and well-being. And it’s, well, just FUN! But in our busy lives of responsibility, how can we find time for it?

What is fun?

It starts by understanding what fun means to you. I’ve been pondering this myself lately, and have decided there are different levels of “fun”. There are things I enjoy doing, things I just find relaxing, things I love to do and a few things that really make me laugh. For example, I enjoy cooking but I don’t find it side-splitting fun. I love working jigsaw puzzles, and I find walking on the beach to be fun. Side-splitting fun usually involves spending time with a few friends who make me laugh.

Next, figure out what activities go on your list of fun and enjoyable things to do. Perhaps you like to put your feet up in the recliner and binge watch your favorite Netflix shows. Maybe fun for you is taking the kids to Disney (or maybe fun is taking the kids to Grandma’s while YOU go to Disney!). Some people really enjoy reading a good novel, or scrap-booking, or woodworking, or canoeing, or painting, or gardening, or playing fetch with the dog, or playing a video game, or listening to music, or joking with friends…. What do YOU have fun doing? (You get bonus points if your fun involves physical movement.)

Try this for one week

Experiment by picking one thing from your fun list and doing it once in the next 7 days. You don’t have to carve out an hour or completely rearrange your schedule. Just keep it simple and make it fit with your life.

If reading is fun for you, perhaps spend just 10 minutes during your lunch-break one day this week reading. If you like to listen to music, perhaps you could put the TV on a music station while you are cooking dinner one night this week. If you enjoy gardening, maybe spend 15 minutes working on a small section of the flower bed. Try something for this week, and if it doesn’t work out, try something different next week.

Remember this…

When we get to the end of our lives, who will say “Gee, I wish I had worked more!”? To bring more fun into your life, start with a small step this week: pick something you find fun or enjoyable, and do it once this week.
